David Ortiz

For a guy that hardly ever plays the field, David Ortiz sure gives the Boston Red Sox a lot. Even though Ortiz is usually nothing more than a designated hitter, he still finds more than one way to contribute to his team. Plus, he can also do a good job at first base if it is asked of him; don’t think that Ortiz is simply a one dimensional player.

But when it comes down to it, Ortiz really shines when he is at the plate. At this point in the season Ortiz is batting .287. This is not the best average in the world, but it is more than adequate for a guy of his stature. But Ortiz brings plenty of bat in the power department. In addition to his batting average, Ortiz has knocked in 121 runs, and hit 47 home runs. These are great numbers regardless of who you are, or what team you play for. To go along with all of this Ortiz has also scored 99 runs himself. This just goes to show you that Ortiz does much more than simply hit the long ball.

At 30 years of age it appears that Ortiz is still going strong. His bat is as lively as ever, and without having to play in the field Ortiz gets to save his legs day in and day out. This will go a long way in ensuring that Ortiz has a very long career.

If the Red Sox are going to win the World Series in 2006, Ortiz will have to play big in the playoffs once again.
